Amid frustrations over whether Verborgen could be accepted, even in the Indie mainstream, paradoxically, Xyra formed an esoteric side-band called The LINE__. Contrary to popular belief, Xyra titled The LINE__, after a Doors-inspired Nico song - also known as Saeta.
The LINE-up consisted of Verborgen's pianist, Andrew Cann (also on guitar), and two classically-trained brothers ~ violinist Doug Empie and keyboardist, Bret Empie . Very briefly, an experimental guitarist named Christian Nokes added youthful energy to the mix. Gradually, Christian faded away, leaving behind a few chord structures for which he received liner note credits. A wise move, perhaps, as his use of samplers and electronic effects seemed better suited to instrumental compositions.
The LINE__ did not employ a rhythm section. Albeit his seemed odd to observers, it worked to their advantage. During this phase of the project, the band focused more on melodies, chord structures, and leads.
Besides joining members of Verborgen to record the first phase of Through the Dark Glass Shining, in 2002, The LINE__ never quite made it out of the practice space. Nevertheless, the moodiness of the music developed then pervade much of what leap from pen to recording console in the future.
