Master cellist, Fred Lieder was the first to join the Verborgen trio in the summer of 1997, later bringing percussionist Norm Thorne, and multiwindists Robert Foggleman and Don Stapleson into the fold.
Natural depth, ingenuity, and obvious savvy enhance Fred's impeccable skills in performing, arranging, and improvisation. Spanning many genres with his diverse and impressive background, the addition of Fred Lieder on cello brought to the music an irreplaceable, beautifully rich, innovative, and brilliantly unique element - exhibiting uncompromising personality.
Born in Washington DC, Fred began diligently studying the instrument at age 10. Developing an interest in jazz and rock, at 14, Fred began incorporating these genres of his own volition.
Later majoring in cello at the University of Maryland, Fred studied with maestros Evelyn Elsing and David Sayer.
Surprisingly, for the amusement of himself and others, Fred extracts lead riffs from such Rock icons as Jimi Hendrix, creating an effect that both titillates and boggles the mind!
Playing the notable venues Blues Alley, Black Cat, and The State Theater with Xyra's original line up, Fred also performed concerts at Wolf Trap, The Smithsonian, The Birchmere, and The Kennedy Center.
Not only is Fred Lieder a much sought-after studio musician, he recently recorded a CD of original blues for cello tunes. He also gives private lessons at his "Cello Studio" in Wheaton, Maryland and tours with various musicians from the Washington DC area.
Fred performed numerous live gigs with Xyra & Verborgen, and recorded two demos and three CD releases with them at Omega, NPR and Recording Arts Studio, 1997-1999.
The last gig Fred played with Xyra was at The State Theater, in February 2000.
